On June 11, 2011 the Board of Governors, the governing body for the California Community Colleges, adopted new regulations that limit the number of times a community college district could receive state funding for a student who has enrolled in the same credit course. The maximum number of times a student may enroll in the same credit course is three times.
These changes are effective Summer 2012. Please keep these changes in mind as you plan your course schedule. If you need support, you are encouraged to see a counselor or participate in the array of student support services and tutoring available on campus.
Districts may designate two types of courses as repeatable pursuant to this section:
Students may repeat as many times as they want, but the district will only be paid for 350 hours of enrollment (175 in the sport and 175 in the corresponding conditioning course)
One of the three types of courses that may be designated repeatable pursuant to district policy, if the following conditions are met:
A course may be repeated due to a significant lapse of time of no less than 36 months if there is an approved recency prerequisite for the course or program, or another institution of higher education to which the student seeks to transfer has established a recency requirement. Only the last grade will be included in determining GPA.
A student with a disability may repeat a special class any number of times when an individualized determination verifies that such repetition is required as a disability-related accommodation.
A course may be repeated (with a passing or substandard grade) if there are extenuating circumstances which justify the repetition. Extenuating circumstances are verified cases of accidents, illness, or other circumstances beyond the control of the student. The student must file a petition with appropriate documentation. Only the last grade will be included in determining GPA.
A student may repeat a course in occupational work experience as long as he/she does not exceed the limits on the number of units of cooperative work experience stated in the course description. The grade received each time shall be included for purposes of calculating the student's GPA. Only if:
A student may repeat a course any number of times if it is determined to be legally mandated. Proper documentation must be submitted to the Admissions & Records Office. Only the last grade will be included in determining GPA.
A student may repeat a course as a result of a significant change in industry or licensure standards such that repetition of the course is necessary for employment or licensure. Proper documentation must be submitted to the Admissions & Records Office. Only the last grade will be included in determining GPA.
A student may not take courses in Art, Exercise Science, or Music that are related in content and have a similar primary educational activity more than four times. Courses subject to this limitation are designated in the Course Description section. The limitation applies if a student receives a substandard grade or “W" during one or more of the enrollments.
The following is an example scenario (Dance 082 has a sequence of A-B-C-D):
