Fall 2021 short-term classes starting soon

In a hurry to pick up some quick college credits? Or ready to dip your toe in the water and return to Grossmont or Cuyamaca colleges for in-person classes?

Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges have increased their offerings of short-term, accelerated classes for the fall based on demand, with more students returning to the campuses for both in-person and virtual classes. With an eye toward flexibility and helping students quickly earn credits as they progress in their education, the classes range in length from four to eight weeks, in contrast to 16 weeks for regular semester-length classes. The majority of the short-term classes are eight-week courses starting Oct. 11 and running through Dec. 11.

Many of the short-term classes earn students the same three credits of the majority of courses offered during the semester and at only $46 a unit for California residents, are a bargain. But classes of varying credits are available. Financial aid and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College Promise program are available to those who qualify. The Grossmont-Cuyamaca College Promise provides two free years of tuition and payment of mandatory fees at Grossmont or Cuyamaca College for first-time students who are attending college full-time.  Go to https://mycollegepromise.net for more information.

While most classes remain online, many workforce training courses, such as automotive technology and water/wastewater treatment courses at Cuyamaca College and culinary arts and Computer Science/Information Systems at Grossmont College, are offered in person.

Cuyamaca College’s Center for Water Studies has many courses available in the short-term format, including Water Resources Management (CWS 103); Water Conservation (CWS 105); Lab Analysis Water and Wastewater (CWS 110); Water Treatment Plant Operations (CWS 112); and Water Distribution Systems (CWS 130). With thousands of pending retirements in the California water industry, a widespread demand for high-skilled and educated water and wastewater professionals is expected.

Also at Cuyamaca College, another innovative career education offering is the Ford-sponsored ASSET automotive technology program. Recognized as one of the best training programs in the automotive service arena, the Ford Automotive Student Service Education Training (ASSET) program prepares students to support all the systems of Ford vehicles and provides on-the-job training at Ford dealerships.

In addition to the Ford ASSET classes, the college also offers general automotive technology courses in Advanced Brake Systems (AUTO 153); Climate Control Systems (Auto 171); Engine Performance II (AUTO 183); and Diesel Engine Performance 2.0 (AUTO 194.)

Grossmont College’s award-winning Culinary Arts program is opening up its kitchens for in-person classes, including Intermediate Culinary Skills (CA 171); Sugar Work and Décor Centerpieces (CA 185); and Pastry Skills in Bread-making (CA 183).

Administration of Justice classes are another variety of workforce training that Grossmont College offers in its short-term format. The offerings include Introduction to Administration of Justice (AOJ 110); Introduction to Security Management (AOJ 111); Criminal Law (AOJ 200) and Information Security (AOJ 260).

Hybrid classes – those combining in-person with online instruction – are also offered at Grossmont College. They include an Introduction to Linux (CSIS 113); and nursing classes offering remote instruction coupled with hands-on training in clinical settings.

Students taking short-term courses must submit proof of vaccination one week before classes start. Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are also offering many classes to fulfill General Education requirements, including English, cultural anthropology, introductory psychology, political science, history, math, economics and music.
